Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous associations to the club - are among the options to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the club directors as they begin the process of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise candidate, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
