‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from injury table to scoring with Athletic
Whenhe first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in English soil, an young appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at Adams Park in fall 2015, he scored. During his subsequent match he took the field in the country, against Sunderland two months later, he converted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, indeed, he scored again. As he revisited to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in the 2017 season, he did it once more. An excellent finish, as well. “In fact,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did their duty: he was replaced.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker admits, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I don’t know about Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I have no idea the validity, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and another trip to England, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on midweek. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the club, partly because of the demands of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. But, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river flanked by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he says.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. Born to the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he went through a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.
“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the top level but with every stage you progress through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.
“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the perspective. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, like when you’re a kid. At Lezama, you have everything, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All the minor details: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved upset in 2020, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and when eventually the requirement appears where you play, a return could happen. Preparation is key. When the opportunity came, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks savor the moment. Particularly after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
